Maryam Lustberg, MD, MPH, director, Breast Cancer, Smilow Cancer Hospital, chief, Breast Medical Oncology, Yale Cancer Center, associate professor of medicine (medical oncology), Yale School of Medicine, discusses ongoing research in breast cancer.

Investigator-initiated, home-grown clinical trials are ongoing at the Yale Cancer Center evaluating how various biological processes could inform clinical trials, Lustberg explains. Additionally, understanding tumor metabolism and targeting metabolic pathways is an active area of research to potentially improve the efficacy of traditional chemotherapies in breast cancer.

Other research is ongoing evaluating immunotherapy and adoptive cell therapy, including tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes, Lustberg says. Another significant area of research is focused on improving survivorship, symptom management, and outcomes for patients with breast cancer, Lustberg concludes.
