Coloring for Chemo/Comfort is a nonprofit organization in Nevada started by Amy Villarele-Hardy and Nina Lawyer in November 2009. The women solicit donations of coloring books and any other item suitable for a kid’s crayon, along with the crayons, and take them to medical institutions, such as the Children’s Hospital of FDA Updates Nevada. The patients sometimes color together at a table, which distracts them from the unpleasantness of chemotherapy and allows them to bond. Many adult caregivers are surprised to find that they like coloring, too. As the organization’s Facebook page explains, “Cancer can be a very dark thing, but Coloring for Chemo [literally] makes it a little brighter.”
