Raoul S. Concepcion, MD, FACS, director of Advanced Therapeutics at Urology Associates, PC, discusses healthcare’s movement away from fee-for-service reimbursements.
The transition from volume-based to value-based payments, Concepcion says, could happen in as little as 2 to 3 years. Physician practices should currently be moving toward alternative payment systems based on value, he adds.
The transition could make it difficult for smaller groups to maintain their current practices without integrating into a larger group. Concepcion says that small practices should take advantage of groups such as Large Urology Group Practice Association (LUGPA) in order to sustain their practice and continue to see patients in a fashion that promotes good patient care.
