Steven Katz, MD, professor, Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Health System, discusses the incorporation of precision medicine into the treatment paradigm of breast cancer.
While there have been major advances in precision medicine on the systemic side of treatment, Katz highlights the lack of progress seen on the locoregional side, including surgery and radiation. There are currently major movements to better understand which patients will benefit from more or less extensive treatment, and breakthrough evidence is expected in the near future.
Katz expects that incorporating precision medicine into the treatment of breast cancer will help to personalize communication between patients and their oncologists, such that evaluative testing will have a significant role in that communication.
