National guidelines for invasive breast cancer has resulted in decreased rates of mastectomy, explains Kuerer. Physicians are still unsure as to how there can be a different margin of criteria for DCIS versus invasive breast cancer with DCIS, especially when patients are receiving postoperative radiotherapy.

There are data suggesting that there is multifocality related to DCIS but the same criteria applies when DCIS accompanies the invasive breast cancer, states Kuerer.
