Charles L. Shapiro, MD, professor, College of Medicine, The James, Ohio State University Comprehensive Care Center, discusses the underutilization of preventative drugs for breast cancer.
Shapiro says preventative drugs in breast cancer are underutilized. There are many people that are considered high-risk for breast cancer but do not choose to take preventative drugs. Many people have a fear of side effects, Shapiro says, and will not take the risk of having side effects if they are not already diagnosed with cancer.
By increasing awareness of preventative drugs for this disease, Shapiro feels that a larger percentage of people who are at a higher risk for breast cancer would take these drugs.
