The management of localized kidney cancer has significantly changed over the last few years, says Volpe. The standard of care for these patients is surgery, and when possible, nephron-sparing surgery.

Volpe says that many of the tumors end up being benign or very low risk, so active surveillance may be a suitable option for these patients.
